Classes

At Urban Movement Dance Academy, we offer structured, consistent training across a variety of styles and age levels. Whether your dancer is just starting out or preparing for advanced training, we have a class designed to meet them where they are and help them grow.

Ballet 1 (Ages 8 & Up)

Ballet 1 is the perfect starting point for dancers ready to build a strong foundation in classical technique. This class focuses on developing proper alignment, strength, and flexibility while introducing the muscle memory and terminology essential to ballet. Dancers will gain body awareness, control, and coordination—all of which strengthen technique across all dance styles and prepare them for more advanced movement.

Ballet 2 (Ages 13 & Up)

Ballet 2 builds on the fundamentals of Ballet 1 with greater focus on control, balance, and execution of more complex movements. Dancers refine their technique while improving strength, stamina, and body placement. This level not only deepens classical ballet skills but also enhances overall dance technique—supporting growth in jazz, contemporary, hip hop, and more.

Conditioning & Strengthening for Dancers (Int/Adv)

This class is designed to help dancers build the strength, endurance, and control they need to excel in all styles of movement. Through targeted exercises that focus on core stability, joint alignment, flexibility, and injury prevention, dancers will enhance their technical ability and overall physical performance.

Perfect as a cross-training tool, this class supports muscle memory, balance, and stamina—making every jump higher, every turn cleaner, and every movement more intentional. Whether your dancer is just starting out or preparing for advanced training, conditioning is a vital part of their growth.

Health & Injury Prevention Series

Held on the first Friday of every month, this special class series is designed to support dancers both physically and mentally. Each session will explore a different topic related to injury prevention, strength building, recovery, mindset, and overall dancer wellness.

Led by rotating experts and instructors, these classes aim to educate and empower dancers with tools that promote long-term health, sustainability in training, and a stronger mind-body connection.

Open to all dancers. Highly recommended for students in weekly training or on performance teams.

Jazz I (Ages 8 & Up)

Jazz I introduces dancers to the fundamentals of classical jazz technique, including isolations, coordination, rhythm, and musicality. Dancers will explore classic jazz lines, basic turns, and expressive movement while learning how to carry those techniques into more modern and stylized forms. This class builds strength, flexibility, and performance quality—laying the groundwork for both traditional and contemporary jazz dance.

Jazz II (Ages 13 & Up)

Jazz II takes foundational skills to the next level with increased focus on control, complexity, and performance. Dancers refine classical jazz technique while learning to fuse it with current, stylized choreography influenced by commercial and concert dance. This class challenges students to become more versatile and expressive performers, blending strong technical execution with modern musicality and style.

Contemporary I (Ages 8 & Up)

Contemporary I introduces dancers to the expressive and athletic style of contemporary dance. This class blends elements of ballet, jazz, and modern technique while encouraging creative exploration through movement. Dancers will learn floor work, improvisation, and musical phrasing, all while building the strength, control, and emotion needed to tell stories through dance. A strong focus is placed on body awareness, movement flow, and foundational technique that supports all styles.

Contemporary II (Ages 13 & Up)

Contemporary II deepens the dancer’s understanding of dynamics, emotional expression, and musicality. With a greater emphasis on control, transitions, and intentional movement, dancers explore more complex choreography and improvisation. This class encourages individuality while refining technical skills—pushing dancers to connect more deeply to the music, their artistry, and the storytelling power of contemporary dance.

Improvisation & Movement Exploration

This class invites dancers to tap into their creativity, intuition, and individuality through guided improvisation and movement discovery. Dancers will explore how their bodies move naturally, how to respond to music and emotion in the moment, and how to create unique movement that reflects their voice as an artist.

In addition to improv, this class focuses on choreography building—teaching dancers how to craft original phrases, develop concepts, and invent movement with purpose. It's an essential space for any dancer looking to expand their creative toolbox, refine their choreographic eye, and grow as a storyteller.

Release Technique & Floor Work

This class focuses on the principles of release-based movement and the art of grounded, fluid transitions through floor work. Dancers will learn how to use breath, weight, and momentum to move efficiently and expressively, reducing unnecessary tension while increasing control and flow.

Through exercises and phrase work, students develop body awareness, dynamic range, and a deeper connection to gravity and space. This class is ideal for dancers looking to expand their contemporary movement vocabulary, improve transitions, and explore a more organic approach to technique.

Beginner Hip Hop (Ages 13 & Up – Teens & Adults Welcome!)

This beginner-friendly hip hop class is designed for teens and adults who are new to dance or looking to build confidence in movement. Dancers will learn the foundations of hip hop—including grooves, isolations, footwork, and beginner-level choreography—in a fun, supportive, and judgment-free environment.

Whether you’re trying dance for the first time, returning after time away, or just looking for a new creative outlet, this class is all about learning at your pace, enjoying the music, and discovering your own style.

Acro (Ages 8–12)

This class blends the strength and control of gymnastics with the flow and creativity of dance. Dancers will work on flexibility, balance, coordination, and safe technique as they learn foundational acro skills like rolls, bridges, handstands, and cartwheels.

With a strong emphasis on body awareness and proper progression, this class supports dancers in becoming more versatile, powerful, and confident movers—on the floor and in their overall dance training. No previous acro experience required!

French Fry Crew Groove Lab (Ages 5–7)

This high-energy class introduces young dancers to the fun and fundamentals of hip hop! Through age-appropriate grooves, rhythm games, and beginner choreography, dancers will build coordination, confidence, and musicality—all while having a blast.

Our youngest French Fry Crew members learn how to express themselves through movement, listen to the beat, and move with intention in a playful, supportive environment. This is the perfect first step into hip hop!

French Fry Crew Groove Lab (Ages 8-12)

For our older crew members, this Groove Lab dives deeper into foundational hip hop styles and choreography while keeping the fun and energy high. Dancers will explore musicality, beginner freestyle, and team-based movement that builds confidence and focus.

This class is perfect for dancers looking to develop their skills, learn how to move with style, and prepare for the next level of training or team opportunities at Urban Movement.
